- Semafor reports that Waymo, which currently has 4,000 cars, plans to reach 8,000 by the end of this year and 20,000 by the end of next year, using the $5 billion it recently borrowed.
- The $5 billion came from private credit lenders without guarantees from Alphabet — Waymo's first debt raise — and the deal allows the company to borrow further against its fleet by securitizing leases.
- Waymo operates in 15 US cities and is bringing rides to locations including Toronto, and recently opened a facility in Nashville with Lyft to charge, clean and maintain cars.
- Waymo declined to comment; the fleet numbers come from unnamed people familiar with the matter in a single exclusive. Waymo's own public statement says only that it raised the funds to grow internationally and in the US.
